First of all let’s start with the salads. The only place that competes with Damgoode in this arena, I’m going to exclude zaza’s from this entire argument b/c it serves a different purpose, is Vino’s. The only reason Vino’s doesn’t win is because their tomatoes taste like metal. Weird? Yeh it is. Know who has arguably the worst salad I’ve had around these parts? US Pizza. It’s crappy iceberg lettuce (which has absolutely no nutritional value, in fact some people say it’s even bad for you), other crappy quality vegetables, canned rotel style tomatoes and worst of all, canned slimy mushrooms. What is that? Vino’s and Damgoode both serve beautiful salad greens: a mix of spinach, romaine and whatever those other funny looking greens are with incredibly fresh tasting mozzarella cheese. Point Damgoode.
Secondly, beer. Vino’s probably wins on selection here but I still would rather hit Damgoode for some cheap PBR’s. What about US Pizza, what do we got there? Like 3 beers on tap (possibly an exaggeration): Amber Bock, Shock Top and Miller Lite? I dunno, whatever the choices they suck. Vino’s has the homebrews (which can be really hit or miss depending on the batch) and Damgoode has hella cheap PBR. Your choice.
Thirdly, pizza. Vino’s has great, simple pizza. It’s tasty and works in a crunch time but it’s nothing absolutely special. I feel like I’ve had their pizza before, y’know? US Pizza, wow, what can I say… I’ve had pizza there a couple times and only been happy once. It was a specialty pizza with artichokes or something and it was tasty. Wasn’t a big fan of the crust but whatevs. Again, I’ve tasted this pizza before and I didn’t like it. Damgoode has such a unique taste and flavor with some unique options that feel more genuine and original. Pink sauce i say! Who the hell else in Little Rock has pink sauce? No ONE! (at least that I know of). Who else has stuffy? No ONE! (at least that I know of). Who makes a better pizza in Little Rock with this atmosphere and this price? No ONE!
Lastly, I usually get the same thing at Damgoode Pies. An Underdog, stuffy, pink sauce, minus the sausage or ground beef, whichever it is. Except one time I forgot to say that. I got my food took a couple bites and realized, something is weird here and discovered MY error. I told my waiter, “man, i’m really sorry but I ordered the wrong thing. I forgot to say without the meat and I’m a vegetarian.” Dude was sooo sympathetic and said, “Oh, no problem man, I’ll just tell em I put the order in wrong so you don’t have to pay for 2.” Dude got a fat ass tip, like $10 at least. That’s the kind of service I want. US Pizza servers might as well be the most disinterested people in the world. Vino’s people intimidate me a bit cos they seem a little too cool for me. At any rate my only complaint about Damgoode is that I don’t live close enough for delivery. I’m sure you all have a different opinion and that’s fine because this is mine.

There’s a pizza place here in Norfolk that I bet you’d like, called Cogans. They literally have at least 15 beers on tap. It’s got a good atmosphere and the pizza is good American stuff. The music is a little harsh for my taste but talking to some of the locals the place has evolved over the years from being a bar / punk rock venue into being more of a pizza place with very occasional musical events, so that makes sense I guess. Damgoode sounds like its name is a very accurate description. I too love those other, funny looking greens in a salad.
I like the sounds of this place. Vino’s is a little more on the venue side but they just don’t have a lot of great shows anymore.
Who puts iceberg lettuce in a salad these days? Seriously.
i’m not sure where else i could express this sentiment in my life, so i’m really glad to have the opportunity:
FUCK ICEBERG LETTUCE.
.
pizza’s ohkay, though.
ooooooooooo, that shit sucks.
